Your first appointment

It’s normal to feel unsure about seeing a therapist. You don’t need to be in crisis, and you don’t need the right words. Here is what to expect.

Types of therapy

Finding the right fit.

When you call, our intake team helps you choose.

  • Individual therapy

One-on-one time with a provider on your own thoughts, feelings and goals. For adults, teens and children.

  • Couples therapy

Partners meet together with a provider to talk more openly, work through conflict and strengthen the relationship.

  • Family therapy

Family members meet together to work on challenges as a unit. Often helpful when a child or teen is struggling.

We also offer in-home family preservation, developmental disabilities supports and online DUI classes.

Be prepared

What to bring.

  • Your insurance card and a photo ID.
  • Notes on what's been on your mind: concerns, questions, what you hope will change.
  • A list of current medications, with doses and who prescribes them.
  • Any relevant records, such as past evaluations, school reports, or court or referral paperwork.
  • Contact details for your primary care physician or other providers, if you'd like us to coordinate care.
  • For a child's appointment: a parent or legal guardian, and custody paperwork if it applies.

Your first session

What happens in the room.

A first session usually lasts about an hour. It's a conversation, a chance for you and your provider to get to know each other.

  1. Check-in and paperwork

Arrive about 15 minutes early to fill out intake forms, review our confidentiality policy and sign consent for treatment.

  2. Getting to know you

Your provider asks what brought you in, about your history, relationships and strengths. Share only what feels comfortable.

  3. Your goals

Together you start naming what you'd like to change.

  4. A plan going forward

Your provider suggests a type and frequency of therapy and answers your questions. You leave knowing your next step.

If it doesn’t feel like the right fit, tell us and we’ll help you find another provider. Read your rights and responsibilities and our confidentiality policy.
